上堂：「德山棒如雨點，要且打不得皮下無血底；臨際喝似雷奔，要且喝不得耳朵無聰底。直饒打得悟、喝得省，報恩未必橫點頭。何故？知我罪我。」

Ascending the hall: "Deshan's blows fall like raindrops, but after all they cannot hit those who have no blood under the skin; Linji's shouts roar like rushing thunder, but after all they cannot shout at those who have no hearing in their ears. Even if one attains awakening from the blows and realizes through the shouts, Bao'en will not necessarily nod horizontally in approval. Why is that? 'Those who know me, those who blame me.'"
