Ascending the hall, a monk asked: "Half a month has already passed since entering the summer retreat. Patch-robed monks have teeth like a forest of swords and mouths like basins of blood; have they penetrated a single phrase of Xutang's or not?" The master said: "This old monk has never killed living beings or harmed life." The monk said: "The upādhyāya is excessively compassionate." The master said: "Among the graves, hunger and fullness come easily." The monk said: "'One person is constantly on the road, not leaving home; one person is constantly at home, not leaving the road.' Tell me: which person is fit to receive the offerings of humans and devas?" The master said: "Even a single drop of water he cannot digest." The monk said: "Why is that so?" The master said: "Because he is rolling a ball inside a cloth bag." The monk bowed.
