師乃舉：「雪峯一日敲觀和尚門，觀云：『誰？』峯云：『鳳凰兒。』觀云：『作甚麼？』峯云：『㗖老觀。』觀便開門，搊住云：『道道。』峯擬議，被觀推出。雪峯住後云：『我當時若入得老觀門，爾者一隊噇酒糟漢，向甚麼摸𢱢？』」師云：「雪峯擬議，老觀推出，若較其錙銖，則固有重輕，不知雪峯當時合下得甚麼語，可以入得老觀門。」

The master then cited: "One day, Xuefeng knocked on Upādhyāya Guan's door. Guan said: 'Who?' Xuefeng said: 'A young phoenix.' Guan said: 'What for?' Xuefeng said: 'To eat old Guan.' Guan opened the door, seized him, and said: 'Speak! Speak!' Xuefeng hesitated, and Guan pushed him out. After Xuefeng became an abbot, he said: 'Had I been able to enter old Guan's gate back then, where would you bunch of fellows who swill wine dregs grope around?'" The master said: "Xuefeng hesitated, and old Guan pushed him out; if one weighs their ounces and grains, there are certainly differences in weight. I wonder what phrase Xuefeng should have uttered at that time to have entered old Guan's gate?"
