He then said: "Day after day, the sun rises in the east; day after day, the sun sinks in the west. For one without doing and without affairs, carefully make an investigation. Since there is neither doing nor affairs, what is there to investigate? If you investigate the essential wonder of the Buddhadharma, getting up every day, scolding the servants and directing the maids, talking of east and speaking of west, it is nothing other than being in its shadow. If you investigate the old year not yet gone and the new year not yet come, Old Wang of the eastern village burns spirit money at night, and wild ghosts and idle spirits are all satisfied and full. Here, too, there is no place for you to cut in. In the end, how is it?" Striking with his whisk: "Three hundred and sixty days in a year; without question, the month established in yin is the head."
