結夏小參，僧問：「布袋長年鬧市，觀音終日魚籃，禁足安居，當圖何事？」師云：「擊筒方木響。」僧云：「與麼則深密處足可觀光。」師云：「差之毫釐。」僧云：「和尚答處辛辣，學人如何湊泊？」師云：「向無湊泊處領取。」

At the informal gathering for entering the summer retreat, a monk asked, "Budai stays year-round in the bustling market; Avalokiteśvara spends the entire day with a fish basket. Confining our feet to dwell in peace, what should we aim for?" The master said, "Striking the cylinder, the square wood sounds." The monk said, "If so, then in the deep and secret place one may well behold the light." The master said, "Off by a hair's breadth." The monk said, "Where the upādhyāya replies, it is pungent and sharp; how can this student make contact?" The master said, "Take hold of it at the place where no contact can be made."
