上堂，僧問：「有一句子到爾，拔舌犁耕；無一句子到，爾自招殃禍。明甚麼邊事？」師云：「彼此出家兒。」僧云：「和尚把定封疆，不通水泄。」師云：「不是少林客。」

Ascending the hall, a monk asked, "If a single phrase reaches you, your tongue is pulled out and ploughed; if not a single phrase reaches you, you invite disaster upon yourself. What sphere of affair does this illuminate?" The master said, "Both of us are renunciants." The monk said, "The upādhyāya holds fast the frontier; not a drop of water leaks through." The master said, "You are not a guest of Shaolin."
