上堂，舉：「洛浦因龐居士來參，禮拜起云：『仲夏毒熱，孟冬薄寒。』浦云：『莫錯。』士云：『龐公年老。』浦云：『何不寒便道寒，熱便道熱？』士云：『患聾作麼？』浦云：『放爾三十棒。』士云：『啞却我口，塞却爾耳。』」師云：「洛浦當時，若向龐公年老處下得一喝，免得彼此葛藤。」

Ascending the hall, he cited: "Luopu, because Layman Pang came to call, saw Pang make prostrations, rise, and say: 'Midsummer is virulently hot; early winter is slightly cold.' Luopu said: 'Do not be mistaken.' The Layman said: 'Old Pang is advanced in years.' Luopu said: 'Why do you not simply say it is cold when it is cold, and say it is hot when it is hot?' The Layman said: 'Why suffer from deafness?' Luopu said: 'I release you from thirty blows.' The Layman said: 'You mute my mouth and plug your own ears.'" The master said, "If Luopu at that time had let out a shout when Old Pang said he was advanced in years, he would have spared both sides the entangling vines."
