乃舉：「天童啟和尚因僧問：『學人卓卓上來，請師的的。』啟云：『我者裏一屙便了，說甚麼卓卓的的？』僧云：『和尚與麼答話，更買草鞋行脚。』啟云：『近前來。』僧近前，啟云：『老僧與麼答話，有甚麼過？』僧無語，啟便打。」師云：「者僧喚既近前，何不便與本分草料，只因下刃不嚴，返被暗窺牆壁。」

He then cited: "Because a monk asked Venerable Tiantong Qi, 'This student has come forward prominently; I request that the master be precise.' Qi said, 'Here I just take a shit and finish; what "prominent" and "precise" are you talking about?' The monk said, 'If the upādhyāya answers like that, buy more straw sandals and go on itinerant pilgrimage.' Qi said, 'Come closer.' The monk stepped forward. Qi said, 'For this old monk to answer like that, what fault was there?' The monk was speechless. Qi then hit him." The Master said: "Once this monk was called to step forward, why did [Qi] not immediately give him his proper fodder? Just because he did not bring down the blade strictly, he was instead secretly peeped at over the wall."
