乃舉：「天台幽棲和尚，一日鳴鐘上堂，眾纔集，棲云：『誰打鐘？』僧云：『維那。』棲云：『近前來。』僧近前，棲遂與一掌，歸方丈。」師云：「賤如泥沙，貴如金璧，當時若安詳登座，活得者僧。」

He then cited: "One day, Venerable Youqi of Tiantai sounded the bell and ascended the hall. Just as the assembly gathered, Qi said, 'Who struck the bell?' A monk said, 'The karmadāna.' Qi said, 'Come closer.' The monk stepped forward. Qi then gave him a slap and returned to the abbot's quarters." The Master said: "Cheap as mud and sand, precious as gold and jade. If he had calmly taken the seat at that time, he could have brought this monk to life."
