2.51

次日上堂，舉：「應庵師祖，昔日謝事當山，寄夏淨明示眾：『三十三州七十僧，驢腮馬頷得人憎，諸方若具羅籠手，今日無因到淨明。』」師云：「想見當時龍象，拙孫褊短，不敢貶剝諸方，只多得幾州子，暗地裏賽他。何故？」卓主丈：「勸君不用栽荊棘，後代兒孫惹著衣。」

The next day, ascending the hall, he cited: "In former days, when ancestral teacher Ying'an resigned his duties at this mountain, he spent the summer at Jingming and instructed the assembly: 'Seventy monks from thirty-three prefectures, with donkey cheeks and horse jaws, despised by others. If the various quarters had possessed hands that could snare them, today they would have had no cause to reach Jingming.'"
The master said, "One can imagine the dragons and elephants of that time! This clumsy grandson is narrow and shallow, not daring to denigrate the various quarters; I just have a few more prefectures to rival him in secret. Why so?" Striking the staff: "'I advise you not to plant brambles and thorns; later sons and grandsons will catch their clothes.'"
