2.68

上堂，僧問：「仰山謂香嚴云：『如來禪許師兄會，祖師禪未夢見在。』此意如何？」師云：「蛇入竹筒。」僧云：「仰山平白受屈。」師云：「和爾脫不得。」僧云：「作麼生是如來禪？」師云：「鐵壁鐵壁。」僧云：「如何是祖師禪？」師云：「楚甸雲寒，越山風暖。」僧云：「如何是和尚禪？」師云：「爾是顛耶狂耶？」僧云：「學人從此不問話。」師云：「更須勘過。」

Ascending the hall, a monk asked: "Yangshan said to Xiangyan, 'I grant that elder brother understands the Tathāgata Chan, but you have not yet dreamed of the Patriarch Chan.' What is the meaning of this?" The master said: "A snake enters a bamboo tube." The monk said: "Yangshan suffered an injustice for nothing." The master said: "Together with you, neither can slip away." The monk said: "What is the Tathāgata Chan?" The master said: "An iron wall, an iron wall." The monk said: "What is the Patriarch Chan?" The master said: "In the lands of Chu the clouds are cold; on the mountains of Yue the wind is warm." The monk said: "What is the Upādhyāya's Chan?" The master said: "Are you insane or are you crazy?" The monk said: "From now on, this student will ask no questions." The master said: "You must still be tested."
