2.69

乃舉：「太原孚上座，初參雪峯，跨門纔見雪峯，便參主事，次日却來禮拜云：『昨日觸忤和尚。』峯云：『知是般事便休。』」師云：「盡謂雪峯有陷虎之機，無斬蛟之劍。殊不知，養子之緣，寬而有恕。」

He then cited: "When Senior Monk Fu of Taiyuan first went to study with Xuefeng, as soon as he stepped over the threshold and saw Xuefeng, he immediately went to greet the administrative monks. The next day he came back to bow and said, 'Yesterday I offended the upādhyāya.' Xuefeng said, 'Know that when such a thing happens, let it rest.'" The master said, "Everyone says Xuefeng had the knack of trapping tigers but lacked the sword to slay dragons. Little do they know that the bond of raising a son is broad and full of forbearance."
