He then said: "This matter is very easy, yet because of straying it is turned into a difficulty. Where is the straying? What the eye sees and what the ear hears is straying; what the nose smells and what the tongue tastes is straying; running about and grasping is straying; sensory contact and clinging conditions are straying; right up to raising the mind and stirring thoughts, practicing Chan and inquiring into the Way, far-fetched interpretations of ancient and modern, right and wrong, others and self—all of this is straying. There is only one place where there is no straying, but it is difficult to explain to you all. If it were explained, then even that which does not stray would all at once have strayed."
