The Master gathered his robes and took his seat, then said: "When the strings move, one distinguishes the melody; when leaves fall, one knows autumn. You patch-robed monks know there is something fundamental. Why does the Yellow River flow to the north? If you understand, the principles of things are clear; if not, ask your questions where there is doubt." Then a monk came forward and asked: "The golden cock crows at dawn; the jade phoenix holds a flower in its beak. At the single phrase that matches the occasion, we invite the Master to pray for the Emperor's longevity." The Master answered: "Beneath the valley's green pines there is fuling." The monk said: "If so, then across the nine provinces and the four seas, thunder rumbles and the wind races." The Master answered: "The nest knows the wind; the burrow knows the rain." The monk asked: "What is the first phrase?" The Master answered: "It is actually the second phrase." The monk asked: "What is the first phrase?" The Master answered: "Mount Sumeru." The monk said: "If so, the sunflower turns its heart toward the sun." The Master answered: "One who knows gratitude is hard to find." The monk asked: "When a monk was granted an audience with Emperor Taizong, the monk memorialized, 'Does Your Majesty still remember?' What is the meaning of this?" The Master answered: "Playing the lute in a monastery of scriptures." The monk asked: "The Emperor asked, 'Where did we meet before?' The monk said, 'Since parting at Gṛdhrakūṭa, right down to the present.' Was he speaking the truth or not?" The Master answered: "The approaching wind can be mirrored." The monk asked: "The Emperor said, 'What is the proof?' The monk had no words. What about that?" The Master answered: "A raw-iron steelyard weight eaten through by worms." The monk said: "Just on this day of praying for the Emperor's longevity and opening the hall, what auspicious omen is there?" The Master answered: "Autumn flowers shine brightly before the eyes." The monk said: "The sound of the spring past midnight; the mountain's hue at sunset." The Master answered: "You have mistaken the mark on the steelyard." The monk made bows.
