3.31

上堂，舉：「讓和尚問馬祖云：『汝學坐禪，為學坐佛？若學坐禪，禪非坐臥；若學坐佛，佛非定相，於無住相，不應取捨。』」師云：「南嶽引馬祖，入牛角裏作老鼠活計，忽然得箇出路，却笑南嶽坐在裏許。」

Ascending the hall, he brought up [the case]: "The Venerable Rang asked Mazu: 'Do you study sitting in meditation, or do you study sitting as a Buddha? If you study sitting in meditation, meditation is neither sitting nor lying down. If you study sitting as a Buddha, the Buddha has no fixed form; regarding the non-abiding mark, you should not grasp or reject.'" The master said: "Nanyue led Mazu to do a mouse's work inside a bull's horn; suddenly finding a way out, he turned around and laughed at Nanyue for sitting inside it."
