摘茶次，清涼和尚至，上堂，僧問：「溈山摘茶次，問仰山云：『終日只聞子聲，不見子形。』仰山撼茶樹，意旨如何？」師云：「錢出急家門。」僧云：「溈山云：『子只得其用不得其體。』」師云：「出門不用頻叮囑。」僧云：「仰山云：『未審和尚作麼生？』溈山良久，仰山云：『和尚只得其體，不得其用。』」師云：「子為父隱。」僧云：「溈山云：『放子二十棒。』」師云：「手臂終不向外曲。」

While picking tea, the upādhyāya of Qingliang arrived. Ascending the hall, a monk asked: "While picking tea, Guishan asked Yangshan: 'All day long I only hear your voice, but do not see your form.' Yangshan shook the tea bush. What is the meaning?" The Master said: "Money leaves the house of one in haste." The monk said: "Guishan said: 'You have obtained only its function, not its essence.'" The Master said: "Going out the gate, there is no need for repeated admonitions." The monk said: "Yangshan said: 'I wonder what the upādhyāya would do?' Guishan remained silent for a good while. Yangshan said: 'The upādhyāya has obtained only its essence, not its function.'" The Master said: "The son conceals for the father." The monk said: "Guishan said: 'I let you off twenty blows.'" The Master said: "An arm never bends outward."
