3.39

上堂，舉：「藥山看經次，有僧問：『和尚尋常不許人看經，為甚麼却自看？』山云：『我只圖遮眼。』僧云：『某甲還看得麼？』山云：『爾若看，牛皮也須穿。』」師云：「師不如弟子。」

Ascending the hall, he cited: "While Yaoshan was reading a sūtra, a monk asked: 'The upādhyāya usually does not allow others to read sūtras; why do you read them yourself?' Yaoshan said: 'I only seek to cover my eyes.' The monk said: 'May I too read them?' Yaoshan said: 'If you read them, even cowhide would have to be pierced through.'" The Master said: "The master is not equal to the disciple."
