3.48

上堂，舉：「龐居士因賣漉籬下橋遭攧，女子靈照一見，就父身邊臥，士云：『作甚麼？』女云：『見爺倒地，急來扶起。』」師云：「虎憎雞嘴，聞者畏之，後人衡鑑不高，喚作二俱弄險。」

Ascending the hall, he cited: "Layman Pang, because of selling straining-baskets, stumbled and fell coming down a bridge. His daughter Lingzhao saw this, went right to her father's side, and lay down. The Layman said: 'What are you doing?' The daughter said: 'Seeing Father fall to the ground, I rushed to help him up.'" The Master said: "A tiger hates a chicken's beak—those who hear of it fear it. Later people whose standard of judgment is not high call it both taking risks."
