3.62

上堂，舉：「長生問靈雲：『混沌未分時如何？』雲云：『露柱懷胎。』生云：『分後如何？』雲云：『如片雲點太清。』生云：『未審太清還受點也無？』雲不答，生云：『恁麼則含生不來也。』雲亦不答，生云：『直得純清絕點時如何？』雲云：『猶是真常流注。』生云：『如何是真常流注？』雲云：『似鏡長明。』生云：『向上還有事也無？』雲云：『有。』生云：『作麼生是向上事？』雲云：『打破鏡來，與汝相見。』」師云：「天下具大眼目宗師，盡謂打破鏡來與汝相見為之極則。殊不知，山深水寒，客程稍遠。要知二老膠漆相投，先須會取兩處不答。」

Ascending the hall, he brought up: "Changsheng asked Lingyun, 'How was it before chaos divided?' Lingyun said, 'The exposed pillar is pregnant.' Changsheng said, 'How is it after division?' Lingyun said, 'Like a speck of cloud dotting the great clarity.' Changsheng said, 'I wonder, does the great clarity still receive the dot?' Lingyun did not answer. Changsheng said, 'If so, then living beings do not come.' Lingyun also did not answer. Changsheng said, 'What about when it is purely clear, completely without a dot?' Lingyun said, 'It is still the flow of the true constant.' Changsheng said, 'What is the flow of the true constant?' Lingyun said, 'Like a mirror ever bright.' Changsheng said, 'Is there still anything beyond?' Lingyun said, 'There is.' Changsheng said, 'What is the affair beyond?' Lingyun said, 'Smash the mirror, and I will meet with you.'" The Master said: "Masters throughout the world who possess great eyes all say that 'smash the mirror and I will meet with you' is the ultimate principle. Little do they know that the mountains are deep and the waters cold, and the traveler's journey is rather far. If you wish to know how the two venerable elders were joined like glue and lacquer, you must first understand the two instances of not answering."
