The Master drew together his robes, sat down, and said: "The Great Enlightened World-Honoured One, at the assembly on Gṛdhrakūṭa, entrusted the Way of the lives of humans and devas to kings, great ministers, and powerful dānapatis to protect externally and circulate, so that it would not be cut off. Now humans and devas universally gather, and we celebrate the Emperor's birthday and open the hall. Is there anyone who grasps this intent?" At that time a monk asked: "With an eye atop the crown of the head illuminating heaven and earth, your roaring fame is heard across the four seas. The Grand Chancellor personally received the Son of Heaven's inquiry, and from the deep clouds the ninefold imperial edict flew forth. The revival of the patriarchal way is right at this moment. With one phrase chiming with the occasion, we wish to hear your imperial blessing." The Master said: "Southern Mountain faces the Northern Palace; night after night the bright star is seen." The monk said: "Using only the single flavour of the mindless Dharma, I reverently wish the brilliance of the sun of Yao and the days of Shun." The Master said: "The wind is calm, the sun and moon are regular; the snow clears, and heaven and earth are spring." The monk bowed.
