8.102

結夏小參，僧問：「西天舊令，東土共遵，諸方依樣畫葫蘆，淨慈因甚不入者保社？」師云：「若不同床睡，焉知被底穿？」僧云：「西天以臘人為驗，東土以何為驗？」師云：「漆桶偽驗。」僧云：「如何以漆桶為驗？」師云：「漆桶盛得飯與人喫。」僧云：「恁麼則三十三天撲帝鐘。」師云：「老僧關鑰不嚴。」僧禮拜。

At the informal gathering for entering the summer retreat, a monk asked, "The ancient ordinance of the Western Heaven is commonly observed in the Eastern Land. The various quarters simply paint the gourd according to pattern; why does Jingci not enter into this association?" The master said, "If you do not sleep in the same bed, how can you know that the underside of the quilt is worn through?" The monk said, "In the Western Heaven, they take the wax man as verification; what is taken as verification in the Eastern Land?" The master said, "A lacquer tub is a false verification." The monk said, "How is a lacquer tub taken as verification?" The master said, "The lacquer tub holds rice to give to people to eat." The monk said, "If so, then in the Thirty-Three Heavens they strike the Emperor's bell." The master said, "The old monk's lock and key are not strict." The monk made prostrations.
