8.113

解制小參，僧問：「溈山問仰山：『子一夏不上來，在下面作得箇什麼？』仰云：『鋤得一片畬，種得一籮粟。』溈云：『子不虛過一夏。』」師云：「下喬木，入幽谷。」僧云：「仰山云：『和尚作得箇什麼？』溈山云：『日間一食，夜後一寢。』仰云：『和尚亦不虛過一夏。』此意如何？」師云：「父不慈，子不孝。」僧云：「仰山道了吐舌，溈山云：『子何得自傷己命？』」師云：「要且不是五逆人聞雷。」僧禮拜，師云：「劍握甑人手。」

At the informal gathering for concluding the retreat, a monk asked, "Guishan asked Yangshan, 'You have not come up for the whole summer; what did you do down below?' Yang said, 'I hoed a patch of slash-and-burn field and sowed a basket of millet.' Guishan said, 'You have not passed the summer in vain.'" The master said, "Descending from the tall trees, entering the dark valley." The monk said, "Yangshan said, 'What did the upādhyāya do?' Guishan said, 'One meal during the day, one sleep after nightfall.' Yang said, 'The upādhyāya has also not passed the summer in vain.' What is the meaning of this?" The master said, "The father is not kind, the son is not filial." The monk said, "After Yangshan spoke, he stuck out his tongue. Guishan said, 'Why do you harm your own life?'" The master said, "At any rate, it is not one guilty of the five heinous deeds hearing thunder." The monk made prostrations. The master said, "The sword is gripped in the hand of a potter."
