上堂，舉：「南泉示眾云：『王老師賣身去也，還有人買麼？』僧出云：『某甲買。』泉云：『不作貴，不作賤，爾作麼生買？』僧無語，趙州云：『來年與和尚做一領布衫。』」師云：「南泉被者僧一拶，去死十分；趙州盡力，既無救處，只得助哀。」

Ascending the hall, he cited: "Nanquan instructed the assembly, saying: 'Old Master Wang is going to sell his body; is there anyone who will buy it?' A monk came forward and said: 'I will buy it.' Nanquan said: 'Not pricing it high, not pricing it cheap, how will you buy it?' The monk was speechless. Zhaozhou said: 'Next year I will make a cloth shirt for the Upādhyāya.'" The Master said: "Nanquan was pressed by this monk and was completely dead; Zhaozhou did his utmost, but having no way to save him, could only assist in mourning."
