8.86

上堂，舉：「魯祖見僧來，便面壁而坐。是則是，不挂葫蘆醋越酸，但未見有絕消息者。南泉云：『我尋常道，向佛未出世時會取，尚不得一箇半箇。他恁麼地，驢年去。』」師拈云：「仁者見之謂之仁，智者見之謂之智。」

Ascending the hall, he cited: "Whenever Luzu saw a monk coming, he would immediately sit facing the wall. True, true indeed—without hanging a gourd, the vinegar is all the more sour; yet none has ever been seen to cut off news completely. Nanquan said: 'I always say to realize it before the Buddha appeared in the world, yet I cannot get even half a person. For him to be like that—[wait until] the year of the donkey!'" The Master took it up and said: "'The benevolent see it and call it benevolence; the wise see it and call it wisdom.'"
