次日上堂：「晷運推移，日南長至，東海鯉魚，鼓腮振鬣，南山鼈鼻，伸眉吐氣，唯有趙州老兒沒意智，拕箇破席日裏睡，淨慈路見不平，道箇蘇盧悉利。何故？恐者老子背地裡討人便宜。」

Ascending the hall the following day: "The sun's shadow shifts; the winter solstice arrives in the south. The carp of the Eastern Sea drums its cheeks and shakes its fins; the blunt-nosed viper of the South Mountain stretches its brows and breathes out vapor. Only that old fellow Zhaozhou has no sense, dragging a tattered mat to sleep in the daytime. Jingci, seeing injustice on the road, utters 'Sulu xili'. Why so? For fear that this old fellow behind our backs is taking advantage of people."
