9.49

上堂，舉：「五祖戒和尚問僧：『近離甚處？』僧云：『東京。』祖云：『曾見天子麼？』僧云：『常年一度出金明池。』祖云：『有禮可恕，無禮難容。出去。』」師拈云：「者僧若親從京師來，也恐謾他不得。」

Ascending the hall, he cited: "Upādhyāya Wuzu Shijie asked a monk: 'Where have you recently come from?' The monk said: 'The Eastern Capital.' Wuzu said: 'Did you see the Son of Heaven?' The monk said: 'He goes out to Jinming Pool once every year.' Wuzu said: 'Where there is propriety, one can be pardoned; where there is no propriety, it is hard to tolerate. Get out!'" The master took this up and said: "If this monk had truly come from the capital, I fear one could not deceive him either."
