9.89

書雲夜參，僧問：「北禪烹露地白牛，洞山掇退泰首座果卓，此意如何？」師云：「鬪貧不鬪富。」僧云：「還有優劣也無？」師云：「優則同優，劣則同劣。」僧云：「只如徑山，今冬果子貴，將什麼與諸人分冬？」師云：「鐵酸豏。」僧云：「恁麼則勝他北禪洞山多矣。」師云：「合取狗口。」僧云：「學人來夜果子，還有分也無？」師云：「獨有爾無分。」僧云：「謝和尚果子。」師云：「家賊難防。」

During the winter-solstice evening gathering, a monk asked: "Beichan cooked the white ox on the open ground; Dongshan removed Head Monk Tai's fruit table. What do these mean?" The Master said: "Competing in poverty, not competing in wealth." The monk said: "Is there any superiority or inferiority?" The Master said: "If superior, equally superior; if inferior, equally inferior." The monk said: "As for Jingshan, fruit is expensive this winter; what will you share the winter with everyone with?" The Master said: "Iron sour buns." The monk said: "If so, then you surpass Beichan and Dongshan by far." The Master said: "Shut your dog mouth." The monk said: "Does this student have a share of tomorrow night's fruit or not?" The Master said: "Only you have no share." The monk said: "Thank you, Upādhyāya, for the fruit." The Master said: "A domestic thief is hard to defend against."
