The Master then said: "Before the six lines of the hexagram have moved, the one breath secretly returns. On the budless branch it intends to put forth a sprout; at the crown of the shadowless tree it first breaks open the calyx. Sun warmth inside the flask, the empty chamber generates white light. The Buddha-Dharma is lifted onto the tip of the nose; to the flowing water, who plays the ancient tune? These are circumstances of the season. As for directing the worldly and holy, commanding gods and humans, striding alone through the great realm, acting as eyes for the world—is there any change or not?" He struck with his staff: "Getting up at midnight to sit with bent knees, the hairy-headed comet appears before the patch-robed monk."
