9.94

朝廷祈雪，上堂，師云：「好雪片片不落別處。」有僧出厲聲云：「落在甚麼處？」師云：「莫作楊花柳絮飛。」進云：「世尊說法，大梵天王以金色波羅花獻，此意如何？」師云：「錦上鋪花又一重。」僧云：「世尊拈起顯示大眾，惟有迦葉尊者破顏微笑，又作麼生？」師云：「物見主眼卓豎。」僧云：「世尊云：『吾有正法眼藏，分付摩訶大迦葉。』此意又作麼生？」師云：「黃金檐子千鈞重。」僧云：「今日和尚說法，忽有人獻花，未審如何顯示？」師云：「洞中春色人難見。」僧云：「只如萬乘帝君，深信此道，遠降御香，祈求瑞雪，應禱一句，作麼生？」師云：「和氣兆豐年。」僧云：「與麼則難逃化育。」師云：「知恩者少。」

Praying for snow on behalf of the imperial court, ascending the hall, the Master said: "Fine snowflakes, flake by flake, do not fall anywhere else." A monk stepped forward and said in a harsh voice: "Where do they fall?" The Master said: "Do not fly like willow catkins and poplar blossoms." [The monk] stepped forward and said: "When the World-Honoured One preached the Dharma, the Great Brahmā King offered a golden pāramitā flower. What does this mean?" The Master said: "Adding another layer of brocade over brocade." The monk said: "The World-Honoured One held it up and displayed it to the assembly, and only Venerable Kāśyapa broke into a smile. What about that?" The Master said: "When an object meets its owner, the eyes stand straight." The monk said: "The World-Honoured One said: 'I have the treasury of the true Dharma eye, which I entrust to Mahākāśyapa.' What does this mean?" The Master said: "A golden carrying pole weighing a thousand jun." The monk said: "Today when the Upādhyāya preaches the Dharma, if someone suddenly offers a flower, how will you display it?" The Master said: "The spring colors within the cave are hard for people to see." The monk said: "As for the Emperor of Ten Thousand Chariots, who deeply believes in this Way, sending imperial incense from afar to pray for auspicious snow, what is the phrase that answers the prayer?" The Master said: "Harmonious atmosphere portends an abundant year." The monk said: "If so, then it is difficult to escape nurturing transformation." The Master said: "Those who know gratitude are few."
