虛堂和尚語錄 8.68

8.68

Ascending the hall on the Buddha's birthday: "When the World-Honoured One was first born, pointing separately to heaven and earth, he said: 'Above heaven and below heaven, I alone am supreme.' This too was like finding tin in the middle of the night. Later, Great Master Yunmen said: 'Had I seen him then, I would have struck him dead with one blow of a staff to feed the dogs, hoping for peace in the world.' Presenting offerings to the Buddha does not require much incense. Today Nanshan wants to vent his indignation for the yellow-faced old fellow." Striking his staff, he said: "When the feather of a zhen bird falls into the water, fish and turtles die."
