The Master then said, "Clear springs and white rocks, sleeping with the moon and pillowed on the clouds, bamboo huts and thatched halls, relaxing the spirit and suiting one's mind—this can be called suddenly forgetting body and world, a secluded monk severed from the mundane. For no reason, confining feet and observing retreat, the Buddhadharma is present every morning in oneself; setting a term to attain verification, religious practice is continually in mind. Knowing only how regulations constrain people, how can one enter the stream and forget the objective realm? A patch-robed monk who can take the lead and hold firm without being deceived by others—how about the phrase of taking achievement?" He struck with his staff: "A handful of fragrant grass, before one has leisure to pick it up, / The six-ringed golden staff resounds across the distant sky."
