He further brought up: "Dongshan instructed the assembly, saying, 'In early autumn and late summer, brothers, going east or going west, you must go directly to the place where there is not an inch of grass for ten thousand miles.' Word reached the master of Liuyang Hermitage, who said, 'Why not say that as soon as one steps out the door, there is already grass?' Because of this, their dynamics matched, and their Way spread throughout the realm. Jingshan is not like that. If a monk suddenly came forward to take leave, I would only say to him, 'The autumn heat is still scorching, and you intend to pack your bundle and hat—why so hasty?' Tell me, how much distance is there between me and the two elders?" He tapped with his whisk: "An ugly woman knitting her brows."
