上堂舉。定上座參臨際問。如何是佛法的的大意。際下禪床。與一掌便托開。定佇思。傍僧云。定上座。何不禮拜。定方禮拜豁然大悟。師云。黃蘗傳來。臨際用底。定上座觸著關捩。廓然一念忘緣。泊爾十方無寄。現前不用安排。直下何勞擬議。不風流處也風流。有意氣時添意氣。

Ascending the hall, [the Master] cited: "Senior Ding visited Linji and asked, 'What is the great essential meaning of the Buddha-Dharma?' Linji came down from his meditation seat, gave him a palm strike, and pushed him away. Ding stood motionless, deep in thought. A bystander monk said, 'Senior Ding, why do you not bow?' Just as Ding bowed, he had a great awakening." The Master said: "Transmitted from Huangbo, used by Linji. Senior Ding touched the mechanism: broadly open, in a single thought he forgot conditions; placid and still, throughout the ten directions he had no resting place. In the immediate present, no arrangement is needed; directly beneath it, what effort is spent in deliberation? Where there is no charm, it is also charming; when there is high spirit, it adds to high spirits."
