Ascending the hall, [the Master] cited: "Dongshan said, 'At the beginning of autumn and the end of summer, whether going east or west, you must go straight to the place where for ten thousand miles there is not an inch of grass.' After a long pause he said, 'Just as for the place where for ten thousand miles there is not an inch of grass, how do you go?' Later a monk cited this and asked Shishuang. Shishuang said, 'Stepping out the gate, there is grass immediately.' Ming'an said, 'Even if one does not step out the gate, it is still overgrown with grass everywhere.'" The Master said: "Stepping out the gate is grass—wading through lush, tangled thickets. Seeing a falling leaf, one knows autumn—dropping into a dark and verdant place. Reaching here, you must grasp that although the mechanism turns its pivot, the seal has not yet made an impression; only then will you attain it. Is it genuinely so?" After a long pause, he said: "Water glistens after the old clam conceives the pearl; clouds gather thick when the azure dragon sheds its bones."
