Instructing the assembly, [the Master] said: "Brothers, as soon as the great function turns, borrowing is made into birth. Only when a single color is dissolved can it be called honorable and noble. Shifting one's feet within the subtle, the crane emerges from the silver cage; turning one's head within the position, the moon spreads across the golden ground. The upright does not stagnate alone; the biased spontaneously walks in tandem. When opened up, throughout the three periods of time there is nowhere deficient. Therefore it is said: 'The entire world in the ten directions is your single eye; the entire world in the ten directions is your self; the entire world in the ten directions is your radiance; the entire world in the ten directions is a gate of liberation.' Where is not the place of your attaining Buddhahood? When is not the time of your expounding the Dharma? Have you not seen it said: 'Huming did not descend from Tuṣita; / A single wheel, fully complete, pervades the ten directions'?"
(Having finished expressing thanks, he then brought up:) A monk asked Qinglin, "How is it when a student goes directly forward?" Qinglin said, "A dead snake blocks the great road; I advise you not to face it head-on." The monk said, "How is it when facing it head-on?" Qinglin said, "You will lose your life-root." The monk said, "How is it when not facing it head-on?" Qinglin said, "There is also no place to avoid it." The monk said, "How is it precisely at such a time?" Qinglin said, "It is lost instead." The monk said, "I wonder, where has it gone?" Qinglin said, "The grass is deep, with nowhere to seek it." The monk said, "The Venerable must also be on guard before he can succeed." Qinglin clapped his hands and said, "Equally, it is poisonous gas!"
The Master said: "This monk knew how to ask, and Qinglin knew how to play with it. It may be called not encroaching upon the empty and mysterious, interchanging and collaterally inquiring. Only one who holds firm the throat is a good hand; one who touches his poisonous gas is not a master of the craft. Tell me: precisely at such a time, what after all is to be done?" After a good while he said, "Carrying it away contained in a bag with a top; bringing it forth held in a bottomless basket."
