Instructing the assembly, [the Master] said: "When the mind of arising and ceasing is exhausted, it is quiescence— / The season when the exposed pillar conceives. / When the mind of quiescence arises, it is arising and ceasing— / The stone maiden bears a child who understands how to speak. / When functioning, the myriad phenomena are not in excess; / In the place of resting, the single reality is without deficiency. / The vine withers and the tree falls—laughing haha! / As before, the pure wind and the bright moon.
"Remember when Zhaozhou asked Touzi, 'How is it when a person of great death comes back to life?' Touzi said, 'Night-travel is not permitted; one must arrive by daybreak.'
The Master said: "Good brothers, not entering the gate, not exiting the door; standing on the highest mountain peak, where does the body appear? Walking on the deepest ocean floor, without hiding traces. The wooden figure holds the seal; facing the wind, patterns are not yet formed. The jade maiden throws the shuttle; directly beneath it, threads on the loom do not catch. Precisely at such a time, how again should one transform and play with it? Do you understand? Shifting a step in secret, the six gates dawn; boundless scenery, spring across the great earth."
At the informal gathering, a monk asked, "What is the biased within the upright?" The Master said, "Dawn together with the white clouds in the sky." The monk advanced and asked, "What is the upright within the biased?" The Master said, "Water flows together with the bright moon." The monk advanced and asked, "What is coming from within the upright?" The Master said, "Do not say the giant fish has no wings; / Today it personally returns from the bird's path." The monk advanced and asked, "What is arriving within the biased?" The Master said, "Facing the occasion without interchange; / Face to face, without before or after." The monk advanced and asked, "What is reaching within the combined?" The Master said, "In the precious palace no one stands in attendance; / Not planting the wutong tree spares the phoenix from coming." The monk advanced and asked, "The five ranks have already received the Master's instruction; is there still an affair beyond, or not?" The Master said, "There is." The monk advanced and asked, "What is the affair beyond?" The Master said, "Far better to cut out one's tongue; who dares face it head-on?"
The Master then said: "Responding to conditions without obstruction, virtuous function is not solitary. At the tip of the hundred grasses, clearly recognize the ancestral master's mind; amidst the heap of the six dusts, distinctively pick up one's own eye. The true person without rank upon the lump of red flesh; the wealthy and noble fellow at the gate of the bustling market. Dignified and unobscured, just right and ready-made. Even if breaking two does not make one, it is still an affair within the gate of provisional establishment. Have you not seen it said: 'When skin has completely shed away, / There is only one true reality'? At such a season, the body does not await the union of father and mother; the Way does not rely on heaven and earth to produce it."
After a good while he said, "Across the ten continents spring has ended and flowers wither; / In the forest of coral trees the sun shines bright and clear."
He then brought up: Guanxi asked Moshan, "What is Moshan?" Moshan said, "Its peak is not exposed." Guanxi said, "Who is the master of Moshan?" Moshan said, "Neither the appearance of male nor female, and the like." Guanxi said, "Why do you not transform?" Moshan said, "Not a spirit, not a ghost—what would I transform into?" Guanxi entered her room from this.
The Master said: "Not male, not female; not spirit, not ghost; not Buddha, not thing. One only knows the white clouds are without intention; who distinguishes that the green mountains are before the eyes? In the night brightness, recognize the pearl of the severed snake; when the pool is cold, cast off the azure dragon's bones. Casually snap the purple silk cord; heaven and the human realm cannot contain it. The affair that cannot be contained has never had a nest."
