Instructing the assembly, [the Master] said: "Good brothers: when a single leaf falls, it is autumn under heaven; when a single dust-mote arises, it gathers the great earth. Held up, it pervades the Dharma realm, functioning without bounds; laid down, it is pure and inherently so, empty, luminous, and beyond duality. A patch-robed monk sometimes throws down a rabbit-horn staff and runs throughout the world, going without any mark of going; then he knows that clouds and waters are the ācārya, and the ācārya is clouds and waters. Sometimes he sits on the seat of Dharma emptiness, sitting through the heads of the reward and transformation Buddhas, dwelling without any mark of dwelling; only then does he see that the family style is oneself, and oneself is the family style. It goes so far that the two marks of movement and stillness are completely unarisen. Thus is permissible, not thus is permissible; thus or not thus are both entirely permissible. Although it is like this, have you not seen it said: 'Even though being a guest brings joy, / How can it compare to being poor at home?'"
He then brought up: A monk asked Jiufeng, "In the Western Heavens at the end of summer, there are many who attain the fruits of the Way. Does the Venerable have them here or not?" Jiufeng said, "There are." The monk said, "What kind of person?" Jiufeng said, "Wearing the midnight moon upon the head, treading on the golden ground with the feet." The monk said, "Does he still turn or not?" Jiufeng said, "Why would he not turn?" The monk said, "What is turning?" Jiufeng said, "From antiquity to present, it is already heard that the dragon casts off its bones."
The Master said: "Not maintaining function, not attaining color. The jade figure has not yet looked into the mirror on the stand; the stone maiden does not mount the loom beneath the moon. It can be said: 'A dragon roaring in a withered tree still carries joy; eyes in a skull still carry consciousness.' Reaching directly to where wisdom does not arrive, when the path has already turned, tell me: how should one realize it?" After a good while he said, "Do you understand? / Reeds and rushes are easily distinguished from the snow with which they mingle; / Water and sky are hard to tell apart in a single autumn."
