At an informal gathering he said: Good brothers! Void yet numinous, empty yet marvelous. Where it functions, it is not rushed; when it is quiet, it remains bright and clear. Occupying the fundamental source of one suchness, it meets the essential juncture of thousands of differences. A person within this is free of the upright and the reversed, free of sickness and death, free of birth and old age. Realized only through personal verification in accord with it, it is not to be reached by thinking. At the ancient ferry, the wind is pure in the autumn expanse; moonbeams and river light coldly illuminate each other. He further cited: Reverend Dongshan was ill. A monk asked, "The Reverend is ill; is there anyone who is not ill?" Dongshan said, "There is." The monk said, "Does the one who is not ill look at the Reverend?" Dongshan said, "This old monk has the share of looking at him." The monk said, "How is it when the Reverend looks at him?" Dongshan said, "Then I do not see that there is one who is ill." The Master said: Since he does not see that there is sickness, he does not see that there is death, nor does he see birth, nor does he see old age. The four marks cannot alter him; the three times cannot turn him. Just at such a time, how do you look at him? After a long pause, he said: Do you thoroughly understand? Open wide the wondrous, pure, completely luminous eye, and recognize the auspicious person of ease and joy.
