At an informal gathering he said: Good brothers! The clear and empty substance can arrive by borrowing the road. Differentiated conditions exhaust themselves following the mind. A dead snake can be handled to come alive; a swift horse can be pulled back. Only then can one believe that mountain clouds drift along and river waters surge endlessly. Everywhere enters this lineage; everything is without separate Dharma. Just at such a time, do you thoroughly understand? Falling autumn mist flies together with the solitary duck; autumn waters share one color with the vast sky. He further cited: A monk asked Zhaozhou, "What is Zhaozhou?" Zhaozhou said, "East gate, south gate, west gate, north gate." The Master said: Good brothers! Zhaozhou's four gates are ever open, not obstructing coming and going from all quarters. At the crossroads, people cry aloud; in broad daylight, business is done without mutual suspicion. When you see it this way, only then will you know that old fellow Zhaozhou has, for the patch-robed monks, extracted the gold dust from their eyes and cut away the trace of mud from their noses. Is it authentic? When the moon reaches mid-autumn, it is full; when the wind comes from the eighth month, it is cold.
