小參云。地水火風休假藉。一切不留還脫灑。家風廓落等虛空。田地虛明非晝夜。鳥道須知舉足難。玄機不許絲頭掛。同中有異異中同。徹底渾淪無縫罅。所以黃龍新和尚道。鷺依雪巢。同中有異。烏投黑馬。異中有同。黃龍老子雖是他宗。甚得吾家之妙。還辨得麼。金雞啄破琉璃卵。玉兔挨開碧海門。復舉僧問趙州。狗子還有佛性也無。州云有。僧云。為甚撞入者箇皮袋。州云。為他知而故犯。又僧問。狗子還有佛性也無。州云無。僧云。一切眾生皆有佛性。為甚狗子却無州云。為他有業識在。師云。趙州道有。趙州道無。狗子佛性。天下分疎。面赤不如語直。心真莫怪言麁。七百甲子老禪伯。驢糞逢人換眼珠。

At an informal gathering he said: Earth, water, fire, and wind—do not borrow them; leaving nothing behind, be thoroughly free. The family style is spacious and equal to empty space; the ground is clear and bright, neither day nor night. On the bird's path, you must know lifting a foot is hard; the profound mechanism does not allow the hang of a single thread. Difference within identity, identity within difference; completely undivided from the depths, without seams or cracks. Therefore Reverend Huanglong Xin said, "The heron rests in a snow nest—difference within identity; the crow perches on a black horse—identity within difference." Although old fellow Huanglong was of another lineage, he deeply grasped the marvel of our house. Can you distinguish it? The golden rooster pecks open the lapis lazuli egg; the jade rabbit pushes open the gate of the azure sea. He further cited: A monk asked Zhaozhou, "Does a dog have Buddha-nature or not?" Zhaozhou said, "It does." The monk said, "Why did it plunge into this skin bag?" Zhaozhou said, "Because it knowingly violated [the rules]." Another monk asked, "Does a dog have Buddha-nature or not?" Zhaozhou said, "It does not." The monk said, "All sentient beings have Buddha-nature; why does a dog not have it?" Zhaozhou said, "Because it has karmic consciousness." The Master said: Zhaozhou said "it does," Zhaozhou said "it does not." The dog's Buddha-nature is analyzed throughout the world. A red face is not as good as straight speech; with a true mind, do not blame coarse words. An old Chan elder of seven hundred sixty-year cycles, meeting people, swaps their eyeballs for donkey dung.
