小參云。好兄弟。本源無風波。真界絕涯畛。木人步月歸。轉側功勳盡。衲僧家須到者般田地。可謂是金針穴細。玉線芒長。那時妙智貫聯。始得十成通暢。不礙奔流度刃。何勞息杼停機。活眼照劫外之身。亡機運今時之步。方信道。眾生及國土。皆同一法性。且道。畢竟承誰恩力。還相委悉麼。手指空時天地轉。迴頭風月屬吾家。復舉僧問護國。如何是和尚本生父母。國云。頭不白者是。僧云。未審。將何奉獻。國云。殷勤無米飯。堂前不問親。師云。煙水隔時。迂疎情在。風雲會處。向去功存。直饒同一色成一家。尚未與那人體合。且道。畢竟如何。良久云。木人夜半言。不許外人識。

At an informal gathering he said: Good brothers! In the fundamental source there are no wind or waves; the true realm transcends boundaries. The wooden figure walks beneath the moon and returns; turning about, meritorious cultivation is exhausted. A patch-robed monk must reach this kind of field; it can be called: the gold needle's eye is fine, the jade thread's point is long. At that time, wondrous wisdom links through, and only then is it thoroughly unobstructed. Not hindered by rushing torrents crossing a blade, why toil to halt the shuttle and stop the loom? With living eyes illuminating the body outside the kalpas, with extinguished contrivance moving the steps of the present time. Only then does one believe the saying: sentient beings and lands are all of the same Dharma-nature. Tell me: ultimately whose gracious power is this received from? Do you thoroughly understand? When the finger points to the sky, heaven and earth rotate; turning the head, the wind and moon belong to our house. He further cited: A monk asked Huguo, "What are the Reverend's original birth-parents?" Huguo said, "The one whose head is not white is them." The monk said, "I do not know: what shall I offer them?" Huguo said, "Attentive rice without grain; in front of the hall, do not ask after relatives." The Master said: When mist and water separate, distant sentiments remain; where wind and clouds meet, moving forward, merits endure. Even if of the same color, becoming one family, you still have not united in substance with that person. Tell me: ultimately, how is it? After a long pause, he said: The wooden figure speaks at midnight, not permitting outsiders to know.
