1.22

上堂舉僧問洞山。如何是佛向上人。山云。非佛。師云。洞山恁麼道。直是把斷家風。不通水泄。見聞匪及。心迹俱消。到這裡。却須通其變使人不倦。直得蒼龍蛻骨。玉鳳生雛。且作麼生。說箇通變底道理。還會麼。清風隨棹滿。明月逐舟來。

Ascending the hall, he cited: "A monk asked Dongshan, 'What is the person beyond the Buddhas?' Dongshan said, 'Not Buddha.'" The Master said: "When Dongshan spoke like this, he utterly cut off his house style so not a drop of water could leak through. Hearing and seeing do not reach it; mental traces are completely extinguished. Arriving here, one must nevertheless penetrate its transformations so that people do not tire, directly enabling the dark dragon to shed its bones and the jade phoenix to hatch its chicks. But how do you state the principle of penetrating transformations? Do you understand? The pure wind fills [the sail] following the oar; the bright moon pursues the boat as it comes."
