Ascending the hall, he said: "Dwelling in purity, it shines all the more; passing through transformations, it is ever as such. The original light manifests the body beyond form; wondrous response possesses the eye amidst phenomena. Directly it comes to pass that thing after thing is unobstructed, and phenomenon after phenomenon accords with truth. Therefore it is said: 'Collaterally dividing the imperial decree to pass on and uphold it; across ten thousand miles of mountains and rivers, its upright authority is deployed.' But what is the affair of collateral division? Do you understand? On a moonlit night, the golden rooster conveys the tidings of dawn; along the fragrant thoroughfare, step by step, the brocade clouds are deep." He then cited: "Minister Chen visited Zifu. When Zifu saw him coming, he immediately drew a circle. The Minister said: 'For this disciple to come like this was already not appropriate; why further draw a circle?' Zifu then returned to the Abbot's room and closed the door." The Master said: "Zifu drew a circle, and the Minister spoke thus—was this not falling into Zifu's snare? Zifu then returned to the Abbot's room and closed the door—was this not falling into the Minister's snare? It may be called: one suppressing and one uplifting, one taking away and one letting go; each put forth a single hand to take up and clarify this affair. But tell me, what affair is it? The giant turtle drinks up all the water of the vast ocean, leaving behind the coral facing the bright moon."
