1.38

上堂云。體彌虛而普應。用彌實以常如。所以古人道。青山白雲父。白雲青山兒。白雲終日倚。青山總不知。大眾既是終日倚。為什麼却不知。還會麼。野鳥自啼花自笑。不干巖下坐禪人。

Ascending the hall, he said: "Its essence is ever more empty yet universally responds; its function is ever more substantial yet ever as such. Therefore the ancients said: 'The blue mountain is the father of the white cloud; the white cloud is the son of the blue mountain. All day long the white cloud leans upon it, yet the blue mountain does not know it at all.' Assembly, since it leans upon it all day long, why does it not know it? Do you understand? Wild birds chirp of themselves, flowers smile of themselves; it has nothing to do with the person sitting in Chan beneath the crag."
