1.86

師於靖康二年四月二十三日入院。上堂僧問。如何是賓中賓。師云。路貧愁殺人。進云。如何是賓中主。師云。相逢無對伍。進云。如何是主中賓。師云。騎馬出金門。進云。如何是主中主。按劍當風。誰敢觸忤。進云。向上還有事也無。師云有。進云。如何是向上事。師云。衲被蒙頭萬事休。師乃云。好諸禪德。風月滿頭。游踐真明之境。雲山有目。坐觀清白之家。亘古常如。通今不變。轉身行鳥道。戴角混時流。便能興盛邦家。始解光揚佛事。且道作麼生行履。得恁麼相應去。良久云。金鋤不動土。靈苗在處生。久立眾慈伏惟珍重。

On the twenty-third day of the fourth month in the second year of Jingkang, the Master entered the monastery. Ascending the hall, a monk asked, "What is the guest within the guest?"
The Master said, "Penniless on the road, it worries one to death."
[The monk] advanced and said, "What is the host within the guest?"
The Master said, "Meeting together, there is no match."
[The monk] advanced and said, "What is the guest within the host?"
The Master said, "Riding a horse out of the golden gate."
[The monk] advanced and said, "What is the host within the host?"
[The Master said,] "Holding the sword against the wind, who dares offend?"
[The monk] advanced and said, "Is there still anything beyond?"
The Master said, "There is."
[The monk] advanced and said, "What is the matter beyond?"
The Master said, "With a patched quilt covering the head, the myriad matters rest."
The Master then said, "Good Chan worthies! The wind and moon fill the head: roaming and walking in the realm of true brightness; clouds and mountains have eyes: sitting and viewing the house of purity. Reaching through antiquity, ever thus; passing through the present, unchanging. Turning oneself around to walk the bird's path, wearing horns to mingle with the worldly flow: then one can bring prosperity to the state, and only then understand how to glorify the Buddha's work. Tell me: how do you conduct yourselves so as to accord like this?" After a pause, he said, "The golden hoe does not disturb the earth; numinous sprouts emerge everywhere. You have been standing a long time, assembly of compassionate ones; please take care."
