Ascending the hall, [the Master] said: "Fathoming the source of the myriad transformations, one attains the dwelling place of the one reality. Its substance is empty yet completely clear, not involved with the sense gates; its illumination is exhausted yet continuous, utterly transcending dust-like thoughts. One directly reaches the point where light and realm are both severed, mind and phenomena are both forgotten. Loftily it alone remains; vast and open, it is completely tranquil. Arising and ceasing, coming and going, do not shift or alter me. Then one can respond to conditions without obstruction, silently illuminating while extinguishing effort. Therefore a monk asked Touzi, 'What is the Master's place of peace and joy?' Touzi said, 'A maiden with twin topknots, white hairs on her head.'" The Master said: "Good Chan practitioners! When in light there is darkness; when in darkness there is light. In the noisy clamor, it is quiet and still; in the quiet and stillness, it is distinct and clear. Do you understand fully?" After a long pause, he said: "Walking to the place where the waters end, / Sitting to watch the time when clouds arise."
