Ascending the hall, [the Master] cited: "A monk asked Luzu, 'What is the speechless speech?' Luzu said, 'Where is your mouth?' The monk said, 'I have no mouth.' Luzu said, 'What do you usually eat rice with?' The monk was speechless. Luzu then struck him." The Master said: "One who steps on level ground and treads steadily is assailed by doubt at the precipitous edge; one who walks the mysterious and embodies the wondrous falls flat on level ground. Luzu usually only knew how to hold fast; yet when it came to this moment, he was able to turn it around. When the illness is deep, one applies medicine; when the medicine has passed, one applies the physician. Only then does one have the method to bring people to life. Do you understand? Do not say that the three tiers of waves at the Dragon Gate / Are nowadays submerging countless people on dry land."
