舉子昭首座問法眼。和尚開堂。承嗣何人。眼云地藏。昭云。太辜負長慶先師。眼云。某甲不會長慶一轉語。昭云何不問。眼云。萬像之中獨露身。意作麼生。昭乃豎起拂子。眼云。此是長慶處學得底。首座分上作麼生。昭無語。眼云。只如萬像之中獨露身。是撥萬像不撥萬像。昭云不撥。眼云兩箇。參隨左右皆云。撥萬像。眼云。萬像之中獨露身𡁠。頌曰。

Head Monk Zizhao asked Fayan: "Venerable, upon opening your hall, whose lineage do you inherit?" / Fayan said: "Dizang." / Zhao said: "You let down our late master Changqing too severely!" / Fayan said: "I do not understand one turning word of Changqing." / Zhao said: "Why do you not ask?" / Fayan said: "'Solitarily exposed amid the myriad forms'—what does it mean?" / Zhao then held up his whisk. Fayan said: "This was learned at Changqing's place; what about your own affair, Head Monk?" / Zhao had no words. / Fayan said: "Just as 'solitarily exposed amid the myriad forms'—does it sweep aside the myriad forms, or not sweep aside the myriad forms?" / Zhao said: "It does not sweep them aside." / Fayan said: "There are two." / The attendants on the left and right all said: "It sweeps aside the myriad forms." / Fayan said: "'Solitarily exposed amid the myriad forms'!" / The verse says:
