舉仰山問中邑。如何是佛性義。邑云。我與爾說箇譬喻。如室有六窓中安一獼猴。外有人喚云狌狌。獼猴即應。如是六窓俱喚俱應。仰云。祇如獼猴睡時。又作麼生。邑乃下禪床把住云。狌狌我與爾相見。頌曰。

Yangshan asked Zhongyi: "What is the meaning of Buddha-nature?"
Zhongyi said: "I will speak an analogy for you. It is like a room with six windows, in which a monkey is placed. Someone outside calls: 'Monkey, monkey!' The monkey immediately responds. In this way, calling at all six windows, it responds to all."
Yangshan said: "Just when the monkey is asleep, what then?"
Zhongyi then stepped down from the meditation seat, seized him, and said: "Monkey, monkey, I see you!"
