Shushan arrived at Guishan and immediately asked: "I have heard that the master has said: 'Phrased or unphrased, like wisteria leaning on a tree.' If suddenly the tree falls and the wisteria withers, where does the phrase return?"
Guishan laughed aloud: "Ha, ha!"
Shushan said: "I sold my cloth mat and traveled four thousand li to come here. Why does the Venerable make sport of me?"
Guishan called his attendant: "Take money and return it to this senior monk."
Then he instructed him: "Later on, a one-eyed dragon will point it out for you."
Later he went to Mingzhao and cited the previous conversation.
Mingzhao said: "Guishan may be said to be right from head to tail, but he simply did not encounter an intimate knower."
Shushan asked again: "When the tree falls and the wisteria withers, where does the phrase return?"
Mingzhao said: "It would make Guishan's laughter turn anew."
Shushan had an awakening at these words and said: "Originally, Guishan had a knife within his laughter."
